HISTORY:

Long time ago, there was a place situated twenty two (22) kilometers away from the town proper. It’s one of the considered upland barangays of Pandan, Catanduanes. It’s a mountainous place and access to this area is very hard. There are about two families that lived here in the name of Juana Trinidad and Tomito Avila. They were the native people of this place and one of the first settlers in this place. Juana Trinidad and Tomito Avila soon got marriage and lived as one family.   

During the World War II, the name of this place was originally “CANDAO”. This name was used for a long time.  It was later on change after the World War II when two Japanese soldiers was caught in this place and were surrendered to the authority. The two Japanese were believed to originate from “Tokio, Japan”. The “Tokio” word was then used in naming the soldiers.  The place was then popularized in capturing the two soldiers and every time a native people of this place were asked where he or she came from they answered “there in Tokio”. As time passes by, the people get used in using “Tokio” as their place name and have decided to change “Candao” to “Tokio”. Later on, “Tokio” had become an official barangay of Pandan and it was named Barangay Tokio.

Farming is one of the main sources of livelihood in this place since it’s a mountainous area and is far from the town proper. At present, access to this place is now easier due to the increasing and more advanced technology especially in terms of transportation.

Barangay Tokio has improved over the past years with now having Barangay facilities, buildings and other equipment. The people also have now access to basic education and many more.
