HISTORY:
Long time ago, there was a Sitio named “Catagbacan” located about two and a half kilometers away from the town proper. It was once a Sitio of Barangay Catamban. Catagbacan got its name from a plant called “Tagbak” that are found almost anywhere in their place. Due to the abundance of these plants, the place was called Catagbacan or a place with many Tagbak plants.
Years have passed and Sitio Catagbacan separated from Barangay Catamban and became an independent Barangay. The people decided to change its name from Catagbacan to Sta. Cruz. Although its official name was Sta. Cruz, the people especially the older one’s still calls it Catagbacan.
Barangay Sta. Cruz was first ruled by Mr. Seperino Rafael, a native of this place. Mr. Rafael’s father which is Mr. Basilio Rafael was the former owner of the Barrio site. The Barangay with the help of the Local Government bought it from Mr. Basilio.
After the term of Mr. Seperino Rafael, he was replaced by Mr. Felipe Baltazar. However, Mr. Baltazar did not finish his term because of some legal issues. He was replaced by then topnotcher Barangay Councilor, Mr. Erneo Icaonapo. After Mr. Icaonapo’s term, an election consisting only of Barangay Councilors was held, the topnotcher of which will be considered as the new Barangay Captain. Mr. Arsenio Eusebio won the election and became the new Barangay Captain. Mr. Eusebio served for two consecutive terms and on his third attempt to be in the position, an election was held and it resulted into a tie with Mr. Villamor Sabeniano. It was decided through a toss coin. Mr. Sabeniano won the toss coin and became the Barangay Captain. He served for five years.
After Mr. Sabeniano’s term, an election was held and again the former Barangay Captain Arsenio Eusebio won and became the Barangay Captain again.
