HISTORY:
Located on the western side of Pandan, two kilometers away from the town proper lies a beautiful barangay named Oga. On the northern side of this barangay is a swamp leading to Mambang beach, then to the shore of Pandan bay. During the early 1930’s, the earliest settlers were surprised when one day a fish named “Soga” appeared in their swamp. There are many Soga fish in the swamp so the people hurriedly get their nets to catch the fish. Some used their bare hands in catching it. The news spread throughout the town. These type of fish usually stays under the coral reefs, they may have been disturbed and was forced to look for another place to settle until they reached the swamp.
Since that time, whenever the settlers were asked where they are residing, they answer “there in soga”, the place where plenty of Soga fish appeared. Soga is a red fish with very sharp and pointed dorsal fins and very course scales. Its eyes are big. During the pre-war days, there were only four (4) houses in this place. When the World War II broke out, people left the town proper and settled in nearby places, thus increasing the settlers of Soga. Later, the settlers agreed to construct their nipa huts along the hill side.
After several years, the early settlers had their inter-marriages, thus adding to the population of the barangay. They have also selected their Barrio Lieutenant and were later on called Barangay Captain. The inhabitants of this place were indulged in farming, fishing, weaving, and many more. The farmers planted coconut, abaca and root crops. People have decided to settle in this barangay since it’s just adjacent to the town proper. As years go by, residents especially the younger ones found it hard to pronounce the “s” in Soga. So it was shortened to “Oga” and was later on became Barangay Oga.
