HISTORY:
Balognonan originated from the word “BANGONGON” which is a black hard shell that came from the mud in the swamp. It tastes delicious and has fed many people while hiding from the Japanese soldiers during the World War II.
Before it became a barangay, the people that lived there were called “Bangonganon”. They were the native people of this place. The first settlers here were from the Idanan family. The late Placido and his brother Zuelo were the first to live here. As time passes by, the Idanan family grew larger until they decided to create a little barrio and was named Barangay Balognonan. With the help of Captain Gregorio Vera and Pedro Rompillo the name was changed to its present name of Balognonan. This happened in the year 1906. Mr. Placido Idanan was the first to lead this place as a Teniente Del Barrio. When Mr. Placido left as leader of their barangay he was replaced by his brother Zuelo. They were the first two leader of this place. In chronological order, the other Teniente Del Barrio who followed are:
- Victor Fernandez
- Andres Sapanta
- Lucas Posada
- Juan Cantar
- Emilio Cantar
- Santiago Valerio
- Servando Sapanta
- Santiago Ibarita
- Calixto Caballero
- Felicisimo Sapanta
- Francisco Idanan
- Gregorio Eusebio
- Proculo Eusebio
More years have passed and the population of Balognonan grew larger, they needed more spaces so they widen their place by cutting mangroves and put gravels on it. They then later on build their houses on these new areas. Many leaders have ruled this place until the term of Mr. Eugenio Posada in the year 1990. He leads this Barangay for so long. After his term he was replaced by his daughter Edna Posada Arañez. Mrs. Arañez leads this place for 9 years and was replace by Mrs. Elma Cantar. After Mrs. Cantar’s term, Mrs. Arañez was again voted to be the Barangay Captain.
Being a coastal barangay, the people here were mostly involved in fishing as their means of living, others were also farmers. As Barangay Balognonan gets bigger and bigger it has formed many Sitios, the Cagnipa, Ipil, Ilaya, Kahimagan, Kikilas, and Suminimsim. The barangay have shown many improvements in terms of infrastructure. It has now a Catholic Church, Elementary School, Day Care Center, Barrio Plaza, and Caruyo Primary School.
Barangay Balognonan is also a home of beautiful tourist attractions like the “Tuwad-Tuwadan Lagoon, Cagnipa Rolling Hills and beach, Vigaan Big and Small, Busdak Beach and many more.
